A little history first. Before EPGP we had a "one roll per run" rule, which does as it says on the tin. Every now and then a good guy would pass on something as it was a better upgrade for someone else, or they recognised that the other person attended more raids than they so it would be more useful for them to have it. Things always change however, and soon we had scenarios where a person who hardly ever joined raids and was pretty useless would come along for a ride and end up taking an item which would have been best placed elsewhere then disappearing and never raiding again or even leaving the guild. This obviously hindered our progress.

Move on to a year or so ago when we had a big rethink in the way we work. By this time we were well into WotLK content and arguments were flaring up about loot, some people in the guild at the time didn't know what stats they needed, some decided they didn't need to be as mature as others when it came to letting others have an item when it was "fairer" etc. We needed a proper system to decide how this would work. We decided the following criteria were the most important to meet.

- A new loot system will recognise the efforts players make to attend raids
- It must provide a method of tracking how much loot has been given to any individual person and their alts

And very very importantly:

- The intention is to ensure that the entire guild as a single entity gears up as much as possible. It is universally recognised that guild progression depends on a well geared GUILD and not a few well geared INDIVIDUALS.

Systems considered were DKP, EPGP and Loot Council.

DKP - rejected for the reason that players have control over their own points as a "currency". This leads to players not bidding for upgrades as they wish to conserve their points for a "big" drop. This is extremely negative for the guild as it means that a player is deliberatley leaving themselves undergeared in raids. That completely misses the whole point of the game.

Consider the following scenario. Player A has an i232 chest, Player B has an i245 chest from badges. An i245 chest drops in a raid that is an upgrade for Player A but not Player B. Under DKP Player A can pass on this upgrade, and Player B will not take it, so it gets DE'd. The next night we take down an ICC boss and an i251 Chest drops that both Players need as an upgrade. Player A has deliberately left himself less geared for the run, to the detriment of the guild purely with the intention of making sure he beats Player B to that item; hardly teamwork doing your mates out of gear is it? Player B is punished for being a responsible raider and making sure he is as well geared as possible for the guild. If all 10 players did that you could potentially fail at the kill in the first place as you are less geared.

Loot council was rejected as it was hoped people wouldn't need to be told what they should and shouldn't have.

That left EPGP.

- Recognise raid attendance (EP check)
- Track loot given out (GP check)

And the important one;

- Benefits the guild as a whole rather than the individual

The reason that EPGP works where DKP doesn't in this way is precisely because Players do not have control over their GP. If an item drops and it is an upgrade for you, you bid for it; simples. The system is then managed by officers and not you. If you don't get it, it's because someone else has. There are two reasons why someone else will get a drop that you want;

- They have had less loot than you
- They raid more than you

It thus follows that if they have had less loot it will better serve the guild to bring them up, and if they raid more it will better serve the guild for them to have the item. If your raid time and gear drops are similar, then you will find that EPGP will end up rotating you so you tend to take it in turns, again gearing you both up as we go on to the benefit of the guild.

----------------

It has been discussed amongst officers that we have seen a slow slide towards the "saving my GP" camp, so it needs to be nipped in the bud before people start to think it is the norm. This will no longer be a valid reason for not taking an upgrade. That is not to say that you can't put your case across ie "that isn't an upgrade for me because...". But before you do consider two things;

- Stamina is an important stat in ICC for ALL classes now as raid survivability on many fights is seriously challenged
- You have a SIDE bid too. If you can successfully explain why a higher level item is a sidegrade and not and upgrade then you will be permitted to bid at 1/3 GP for it.

Remember too that even the person with the Lowest PR in the whole guild will sometimes get drops simply because no one else needs them.

It is quite clear in there that OnW is all about the guild and not about you, the player. Our aim is to progress as a guild, work as a team, and share in that success when it comes. Of course all players are valued members of that team; but that's because you work for the success of the guild and not yourself. If you don't see it that way you need to find a more mercenary guild.

Happy hunting!

All the best.
